Personal Training
Personal/functional training focuses on improving muscle weakness, limited range of motion, impaired sensation, and lack of balance by way of repetitive exercise. Intensive training and exercise enhance motor recovery or even restore motor function in people with neurological disorders.
Massage
Massage Therapy is offered at Awakenings Health Institute because of the many health benefits that are received through touch. Of these many benefits, there are a few that are specifically helpful when dealing with an SCI. These include; improved coordination, increased mind/body connection, decrease excessive muscle spasms, improved circulation, increase in sensation, decrease in aches and pains, and decrease in nerve pain. The massage treatment room offers one the opportunity to still work on the body while relaxing the mind. Physical and mental relaxation are essential in order to meet the demands of the intense and vigorous workouts at AHI.
Acupuncture
Acupuncture promotes rehabilitation by stimulating areas of the body which have lost the ability to function due to injury as well as increasing existing function. Acupuncture involves stimulating specific points in the body by inserting fine needles. The stimulation helps restore the smooth flow of qi (energy flow) and blood flow through the body’s innate healing response. In addition, due to the intense nature of the workouts at AHI, acupuncture increases the resiliency of the body, maximizing the training potential. Overall, it helps maintain balanced circulation throughout the body which is vital for good health and overall performance.
Proper Nutrition
Given the intensity and energy needed to work out efficiently, it only makes sense to feed your body good, quality food. After all, food is necessary fuel, vital for healing to take place. An understanding of proper nutrition is key to maximizing your training efforts, maintaining good health, and preventing disease. Often with SCI, people can be more susceptible to other health concerns, especially pressure sore and urinary tract infections. A consistent diet of healthy food can often eliminate symptoms, decrease duration and frequency, or prevent illness altogether. Other benefits include improved cardiovascular health, a decrease in chronic pain and muscle spasms, increased strength and endurance, and improved bowel and bladder control. We have a nutrition consultant on staff to answer any questions and help implement a nutrition plan based on your specific needs.
Herbal Medicine
Herbal medicine involves combining individual Chinese herbs into formulas to treat internal or external imbalances/disease states. Herbal formulas have demonstrated excellent results for thousands of years and have far fewer side effects than conventional pharmaceutical treatments.
Craniosacral Therapy
Craniosacral is a gentle, powerful healthcare approach that acts through the central nervous system to aid improved function and balance.
Reiki
Reiki is a therapeutic technique in which healing energy is channeled, or conducted, through a practitioner's hands into the person receiving the treatment. A Reiki practitioner helps to break up blockages by allowing healing energy to again flow freely through the person's body.
Somatic Coaching
A Somatic Coach™ works with the historical, psychological, social, spiritual, linguistic and emotional aspects unique to each individual. The somatic coaching process begins with an initial meeting to assess goals and intentions, followed by a discussion of what actions need to be taken, practices that need to be developed, and what may be getting in your way of achieving goals.
Locomotor Training
Locomotor training is a rehabilitation approach that involves activitytriggered learning whereby practicing a series of specific movements (in this case, stepping) triggers the sensory information that reminds the spinal cord how to initiate stepping.
