Functional Electrical Stimulation

Awakenings Health Institute has an RT-300-S Functional Electrical Stimulation cycle ergometer. What is a cycle ergometer?

An ergometer is a device that measures the amount of work done by a muscle or group of muscles. The cycle ergometer in the RT300-S allows the user to participate in both passive and active therapy.

The RT300-S is intended for general rehabilitation. By cycling and using your own muscles, you can ·

  • Relax muscle spasms
  • Prevent or retard disuse atrophy
  • Increase local blood circulation
  • Maintain or increase your range of motion
  • Allow stimulation to maximize muscle contractions
  • Prevent or decreases atrophy

What is FES?

FES stands for Functional Electrical Stimulation, a rehabilitation technique where electrical current stimulates nerves to evoke muscle contractions. With the RT300-S, FES is used to create patterned movement of the legs, enabling muscles to perform cycling work even though the user may have lost voluntary control of those muscles.

What’s the difference between passive and active therapy?

Passive therapy is when your arms or legs are moved mechanically, for instance by the motor of an ergometer. Active therapy is when your muscles are doing the work and completing movements under your own control or activated by FES.

How does the RT300-S motor help you?

The RT300-S Dynamic Motor Support is an essential component: · It provides assistance to get you going in the warm-up phase. · It provides resistance to work against during the active phase. · If you need assistance during your session, it’s right there to help you.

Easy set-up with RT300-S.

You use the RT300-S from your wheelchair — no transfer is required. Simply secure your feet in the pedals and support your legs with leg guides. Surface electrodes are placed on your quadricep, hamstring and gluteal muscles, and then connected by a cable to the RT300-S. A computer controls the stimulation patterns being sent to your legs, producing a smooth pedaling motion. And you are on your way. Fully automatic therapies mean independence and convenience. The motorized RT300-S lets you complete the full therapy without assistance, even if your muscles fatigue. Pre-set therapy sessions can be tailored to your individual needs by your clinician. Touch-sensitive controller screen makes it easy to start and monitor your therapy. Control all aspects of your therapy session. The touch-sensitive, full-color controller screen and software defaults make the initial set-up fast and simple. In fact, you’ll be able to start therapy in only minutes. At a glance, you can evaluate your stimulation level, speed, distance, power, resistance and time remaining. Internet connectivity lets you follow your results. You and your clinician can control and monitor your progress with the RT300-S on the internet, helping you optimize your results no matter where you live.
